CAP is the only company in Chile engaged in the entire ferrous value chain.

With facilities operating in different parts of the country, our company participates in the iron ore mining industry through CAP Minería, in steelmaking through CAP Acero and in the development of steel solutions through the Steel Processing Group formed by Cintac, Tupemesa and Tubos Argentinos S.A (Tasa).

These businesses are complemented with CAP New Businesses area under which Aguas CAP, a water desalination company, Tecnocap S.A., an electric power transmission company, and Las Losas S.A. port can be found.

CAP-produced ores are mainly exported to Asian markets while its constructive steel solutions and products are commercialized in Chile, Argentina and Peru.

Important changes occurred during 2017 in CAP or CAP’s supply chain size, structure or property.

VALUE CHAIN

CAP MINERÍA

CAP Minería activities start with the exploration and evaluation of new resources followed by the development and construction of the mining project. During the operations, the iron ore is extracted, concentrated and processed.

CAP Minería produces high-grade magnetic iron in the form of concentrate and pellets. This is better valued than hematite-type irons, as its extraction and processing require a lower amount of raw materials and energy, which provides sustainability to the steelmaking process.

Supply Chain

Energy, water, fuels and mining equipment are the critical elements required by this production stage.

CAP ACERO

Iron ore is the main supply used by CAP Acero in the steelmaking process and is the only company in Chile producing steel out of naturally-sourced raw materials, such as iron ore, coal and limestone. This feature guarantees high quality and purity products.

CAP Acero produces thick rods for the manufacturing of grinding means used in the mining industry, wire rod and steel concrete reinforcement rods used in construction.

Supply Chain

Iron ore, metallurgical coal, limestone, electric power, water and the supplies inherent to metallurgical production represent the main elements required by the steelmaking process.

STEEL PROCESSING
CINTAC, TASA Y TUPEMESA

This company specializes in the development of value-added solutions directed to industrial, infrastructure and residential construction for Chilean, Peruvian and Argentinean markets. It is integrated by Cintac S.A. (and its affiliates Cintac S.A.I.C. and Tupemesa S.A.) and Intasa, whose affiliate is Tubos Argentinos S.A (TASA).

Additionally, Cintac has consolidated in Latin America as manufacturer of photovoltaic structures used in projects developed in Chile and other countries of the region.

Supply Chain

The critical supplies used by Cintac are:
  • In tubes and profiles production: steel, zinc in the galvanizing process, electric power and ground water used in tube cooling.

  • In panels: steel and plating paint.

  • In insulated panels: steel, PUR (polyurethane), PIR (polyisocyanurate), POL (polystyrene), rock wool, paint and electric power for equipment operation.

In 2017, and following corporate development policies, the company started to work in constructive solutions. Thus, while on its trial period in the market, the development of prefabricated bathroom and kitchen modules ready to be installed in different housing projects has meant for the company taking a step forward into new construction-related items. Thus, finishing elements have been added, such as ceramic tiles, bathroom appliances and fittings that used to be included in the construction a lot later than Cintac. A similar situation has occurred in agricultural solutions where, in principle, only metal structures are needed but may eventually call for other materials and supplies to offer integral solutions.

NEW BUSINESSES
PORTS AND LOGISTICS / AGUAS CAP

The CAP Group is reaching out to related businesses, leveraging its competitive advantages in port infrastructure, water and electric power generation and in the extraction of other metals.

The company owns six port facilities (Punta Totoralillo, Guacolda II, Las Losas, Guayacán, Huachipato and Guarello) and, since 2016, is ranked as the third largest port operator in Chile.

The desalination plant is located near the Punta Totoralillo port area, Caldera (Atacama region) and supplies industrial water to mining customers operating in the region as well as its own operations in the area. Likewise, CAP Group owns an electric power transmission line. The company is also taking its first steps into the evaluation of projects involving other minerals (copper, gold and others).

Supply chain

Critical services in port operations are stevedores, dock and equipment. As for the desalination plant, the supply of CO2 and limestone for the remineralization of the desalinated water resulting from the process and electric energy to power the system are the key elements.
